Goodes’ Day Suspended

Adam Goodes’ celebrations for becoming the Swans’ games-record-holder will have to be put on ice after he received a one-match suspension.

Sydney co-captain Goodes would have made his 304th appearance – breaking the existing record held by his good mate Michael O’Loughlin – for the club this week at the SCG.

However, the match review panel gave the Swan a one-week suspension for rough conduct.

Goodes slid knees-first after a loose ball, and into Port Adelaide’s Jacod Surjan, in the Swans’ win over the Power. An existing feet-first contact charge from this year’s NAB Cup certainly didn’t help his cause to get the charge dismissed.

The suspension means that Goodes will have to wait until round five’s clash with Hawthorn in Launceston to break the record, and also that he will not be able to add another ‘Charlie’ to his two Brownlow medals this season.

Ben McGlynn is expected to return to the side after being subbed off the field with an ankle injury against Port Adelaide.

The game between Sydney and North Melbourne will be played for the HeartKids Cup in an initiative launched by Swans captain Jarrad McVeigh, who lost his baby daughter to heart complications last year, and former Roos hard-man Glenn Archer.

The initiative is to help raise awareness about Childhood Heart Disease which is Australia’s most common birth abnormality and the largest killer of babies under one in the country.
